The Artificial Intelligence research group at URV was founded in 1994. The group is leaded by Dr. David Riaņo and it has 3 full-time lecturers, 1 associate professor, 5 PhD students and several undergraduate students.

The interests of the group are centred in AI and Knowledge Management in Medicine. The group has been working with Multi-agent Technologies, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery.

Since 2000, the group has participated in one 5th FP IST project (hTechSight) and 3 Spanish IST-ICT projects. The group has been involved in the AgentCities.NET EU Network, and coordinates the AgentCities.ES Spanish Network. The group is a member of the EU Network of Excellence AgentLink III. Specially relevant research lines are the application of Intelligent Data Analysis to predict patient evolution in Hospitals and Health Care Institutions, multi-agent modelling to supervise transplant co-ordination of human organs and tissues, and information retrieval and knowledge acquisition from the Web for ontology learning.

From an administrative point of view, URV capacity for managing EU projects has been proven by Dr. Riaņo, being the senior manager of one of the most active partners of the project IST-2001-33174 during the last year of the project, and also by the URV administration, participating in more than 20 projects in the 5th FP, and 14 in the 6th FP (plus 5 which are under evaluation).
