British Partner: The Research Institute for the Care of Elderly (RICE)RICE promotes research at three levels: clinical, laboratory, and psychology. The clinical research concentrates on the study of the uptake and distribution of medication in an elderly population and the evaluation of potential therapeutic agents for people with memory problems and dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. It has its own 6-bedded ward for clinical studies, based at a specialist geriatric hospital, St Martin's Hospital, in Bath. The laboratory research programme is to advance the understanding of the biological basis of ageing and age-related neurodegenerative disorders and is carried out jointly with the University of Bath. The psychological research focuses on the experience of people with memory difficulties and dementia examining issues such as metamemory, déjà vu, and errorless learning. Recently the Institute has developed a subjective measure of Quality of Life for people with dementia (the BASQID). The research aims to gain a better understanding of memory impairment and develop ways to help people with their memory functioning. RICE commenced operations in 1985 and has been holding Memory Clinics since 1987; these clinics provide a service to the National Health Service. The Director, Professor Roy Jones BSc MB FRCP FFPM DipPharmMed, is an Honorary Consultant Physician in Bath, an Honorary Professor in the School for Health at the University of Bath and a Visiting Professor at the University of the West of England. He is an Editor of the Cochrane Collaboration Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group, a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Dementia Guideline Development Group, and the author of more than 100 peer reviewed publications, articles, reviews, book chapters and books.
